Q: What are the admission deadlines?
A complete application for admission must be submitted by 5th September for the winter semester or by 5th February for the summer semester at the latest. It needs to be submitted at the Studies and Examination Department of the Vienna University of Technology.
Q: Is there an admission test?
A: No, the Master in Logic and Computation is a regular Master’s program at Vienna University of Technology. Therefore, you only have to meet the stated requirements.
Q: What is a “special university entrance qualification”?
A: The “special university entrance qualification” requires international (non-EU) students to prove that they would be allowed to enter an equivalent Master’s program in their home country or in the country where they received their Bachelor degree. This document can come from any university, but must be dated for the semester in which the student wants to start at Vienna University of Technology.
Q: How much is the tuition fee?
A: If you are an EU- or EEA citizen and within the “minimum duration” of the degree program (or fall within another group that is exempted), there is no tuition fee (you only have to pay the students’ union fee). If you are an EU- or EEA citizen exceeding the “minium duration” time, you have to pay € 363.36 per semester. If you are a non-EU national the tuition fee is € 726.72 per semester. In addition to the tuition fee, you must pay the students’ union fee including an insurance (€18,- per semester). The exact regulations are stated on the web page of the Department for Studies and Examinations here.
Q: I don’t speak English very well, is this going to be a problem?
A: Yes. The language of instruction for the Master Logic and Computation is English, i.e., all courses are held in English. Therefore you should have at least level B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Q: I don’t speak German, is this going to be a problem?
A: No, the language of instruction for the Master Logic and Computation is English, i.e. all courses are held in English. The part “Knowledge of the German language” in the official admission information does not apply to this Master’s program. Still, we recommend taking at least the “German for foreigners” course that is offered at Vienna University of Technology.
Q: I am from a country where there is no Bachelor/Master system – can I still apply for Master Logic and Computation?
A: Yes, but the dean of study affairs will decide on a case by case basis whether you fulfil the requirements for the Master or not. One requirement you can check beforehand is, for example, whether the amount of credits of your study is equivalent to a Bachelor degree (at least 180 ECTS).
Q: Do I need a visa? What are the entry and residence regulations for citizens of my country?
A: For information concerning entry and residence regulations please consult the Austrian embassy in your country. Before travelling to Austria, students might need to apply for a VISA / residence permit.
Please note that applications for VISA / residence permit have to be submitted to the Austrian consulate / embassy at least 3 – 4 months (the sooner the better) before the start of studies. Therefore it is strongly recommended that applicants check the VISA requirements (documents) already during the application process.
For more information on visa, have a look at the web page of the OeAD, and the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
Q: I have a degree from a college (Fachhochschule). Do I meet the requirements to apply for the Master Logic and Computation?
A: Yes. However, an assessment and decision is made by the dean of student affairs on a case by case basis. The dean will decide whether you fulfil the requirements for the Master’s program and whether you have to take additional courses.
